The rocker is designed to replace or mimic ankle movement which for various reasons may have been lost or reduced. The reasons the movement in the ankle may be reduced include surgical fusions, lower limb trauma, arthritis, ankle replacements, residual effects of talipes equinovarus. The rocker is also used in cases of midfoot break down to improve reduce stress on the mid-foot.

As a rule, it takes between 2 and 3 weeks before your devices are ready for issue. In special circumstances, they can be made quicker. Braces take between 3 and 4 weeks.

Generally, patients don’t have to change their footwear. However high heeled court shoes are not suitable for orthotic inserts. Most patients bring a few pairs of shoes into the clinic when we are issuing their devices and we simply let them know which ones are suitable.

It’s not unusual for the main shell of the device to last more than 20 years. However, any soft coverings or custom pads may need to be replaced from time to time. A lot depends on the type of use and the levels of perspiration levels of the individual’s feet.

This varies from case to case but most patients wear them on a daily basis and only remove them if they are going out for a few hours and wearing shoes that are unsuitable. Some patients can leave their orthoses out of their shoes for extended periods once their symptoms have improved. Or if they are spending most of the day sitting.

All orthoses and braces need to be broken in slowly. At the time of issue, you will be given both verbal and written instructions on how this should be carried out.
