FAQ – Frequently Asked Questions
I’ve had a bad experience with orthotics before, are yours comfortable to wear?
A great many patients who are uncomfortable wearing orthoses have been issued with what is known as pseudo custom devices. These are not only uncomfortable, but they can be very damaging to your foot function. All our orthoses and braces are fully custom and are made in our own onsite manufacture facility. What this means for you the patient is that your devices will fit properly function correctly and be comfortable to wear. The clinic does not charge for review and modification of your devices in the first 3 months after issue, so you can come back and have modifications made if they are in any way uncomfortable. (See article Why custom orthoses don’t work)
What does your rocker orthotic do?
The rocker is designed to replace or mimic ankle movement which for various reasons may have been lost or reduced. The reasons the movement in the ankle may be reduced include surgical fusions, lower limb trauma, arthritis, ankle replacements, residual effects of talipes equinovarus. The rocker is also used in cases of midfoot break down to improve reduce stress on the mid-foot.
What does a consultation entail?
During your consultation you will have all aspects of your foot posture and foot movements assessed, you will also have your lower limb muscle function tested and we will also assess your footwear. If you want to book a consultation please contact us: 028 9083 3568
How long does it take to get my devices made?
As a rule, it takes between 2 and 3 weeks before your devices are ready for issue. In special circumstances, they can be made quicker. Braces take between 3 and 4 weeks.
If I get orthotic inserts will I have to change my shoes?
Generally, patients don’t have to change their footwear. However high heeled court shoes are not suitable for orthotic inserts. Most patients bring a few pairs of shoes into the clinic when we are issuing their devices and we simply let them know which ones are suitable.
How long should I expect my inserts to last?
It’s not unusual for the main shell of the device to last more than 20 years. However, any soft coverings or custom pads may need to be replaced from time to time. A lot depends on the type of use and the levels of perspiration levels of the individual’s feet.
If I get orthoses will I have to wear them all the time?
This varies from case to case but most patients wear them on a daily basis and only remove them if they are going out for a few hours and wearing shoes that are unsuitable. Some patients can leave their orthoses out of their shoes for extended periods once their symptoms have improved. Or if they are spending most of the day sitting.
Will I need to break my devices in?
All orthoses and braces need to be broken in slowly. At the time of issue, you will be given both verbal and written instructions on how this should be carried out.
